Stanford Roommate Letter 怎麼寫：250 字裡藏一個你願意一起住的人

每年我帶 Stanford 申請者時，最讓他們困惑的不是 Why Stanford（雖然那也難），是這一題：

"Virtually all of Stanford's undergraduates live on campus. Write a note to your future roommate that reveals something about you or that will help your roommate—and us—get to know you better." >250 words

學生看完第一反應通常是：「老師，這要怎麼寫？我又不認識我未來的室友。」

我的回答是：「重點不是寫給室友——是寫給 adcom 看的『你住起來像什麼』。」

Stanford Roommate Letter 是 Top 30 補充文書裡最 quirky、最容易寫錯、也最容易出色的一篇。它測的不是 achievement、不是 academic fit、不是 leadership——它測的是「你是不是一個 adcom 願意推薦給某位 Stanford 學生當室友的人」。本文用我帶過 50+ Stanford 申請者的經驗，拆解這 250 字怎麼寫出 warm、weird、specific——以及為什麼「I'm a hard worker and team player」會直接讓你出局。

一、Roommate Letter 是 Stanford 補充文書的「人格測試」

Stanford 給的補充文書共有 3 個 short essays（100-250 字）：

加上 3 個 short responses（50 字）：

• What is the most meaningful thing you've done? Why?
• What is one thing you are looking forward to experiencing at Stanford?
• Name one thing you are looking forward to doing at Stanford.

Roommate Letter 是 Stanford 招生策略的關鍵 data point——它讓 adcom 在 academic profile 之外，模擬一場真實的室友配對。Stanford 大一住宿是隨機配對，所以這封信實際上會被讀兩次：(1) admission review，(2) 入學後 housing 演算法的 personality reference。

二、Stanford 在這 250 字裡到底想看什麼

15 年來我跟 Stanford 校友、admissions reader 喝過咖啡，他們透露的 Roommate Letter 評分標準：

他們不在看的：

• 學業成就（PS 已經有了）
• 領導力（Activities 已經有了）
• 興趣 spike（Why X 已經有了）
• 「我有多 diverse」（Diversity essay 在別處）

換句話說：Roommate Letter 是 Stanford 在所有量化指標之外，最後一個 human filter。

三、Warm, Weird, Specific：3 條鐵律

我給每位學生寫 Roommate Letter 時的 framework：WWS（Warm, Weird, Specific）。

Warm（溫暖）

你要讓讀者感覺：「我會想跟這個人吃晚餐。」

Weird（怪奇）

Weird 是 Roommate Letter 最關鍵的詞。Stanford 每年讀 56,000 份申請，他們看膩了「我熱愛閱讀」「我是 team player」。真正能脫穎而出的是怪癖——不是極端的怪，是你日常生活裡某個只有你自己會覺得正常的習慣。

範例：

• 「我會在凌晨 2 點突然想吃西瓜——而且只吃靠近邊邊的那一圈白色」
• 「我有 47 雙幾乎一模一樣的黑襪子，但我永遠能找到一隻單獨的」
• 「我洗澡時會大聲背 periodic table，按原子量倒著背」
• 「我有一台 1973 年的 Olympia 打字機，我用它打 grocery list」

Weird 的標準：你寫完唸給朋友聽，朋友會笑出來說「對，這就是你」。

Specific（具體）

Generic 是 Roommate Letter 的死刑。

Specific 的測試：把句子裡的「我」改成任何其他名字，這句話還能成立嗎？如果能，太 generic。

四、Everyday Quirk 法則：怎麼挖出你的 weird

每年我跟學生做 Roommate Letter brainstorm 時，最有用的技巧叫 Everyday Quirk Inventory——

問學生這 10 個問題，他必須回答 specific 答案（不是 generic）：

1. 你早餐通常吃什麼？怎麼吃？（有沒有 ritual？）
2. 你洗澡時做什麼？（唱歌？背書？想 problem？）
3. 你睡前的最後 10 分鐘做什麼？
4. 你身上長期帶著一個什麼小物件？（鑰匙圈？護身符？某個 random 東西？）
5. 你最近一次跟陌生人交談是什麼狀況？
6. 你的家人會吐槽你的哪個習慣？
7. 你寫字 / 打字時手會做什麼小動作？
8. 你有什麼 food preference 是別人覺得奇怪的？
9. 你如何處理憤怒？焦慮？興奮？
10. 你 weekend 早上 8 點通常在做什麼？

我帶過的小 Y，她回答第 4 題：「我隨身帶一支 1989 年的 Pilot Hi-Tec C 0.4 鋼筆，是我外公留的，墨水只買日本進口 blue-black。」

——這就是她 Roommate Letter 的第一句。

五、真實開頭範例：5 個 Stanford 錄取者的第 1 句

來看 5 個我輔導過、最後 admit Stanford 的學生，他們 Roommate Letter 的開頭句：

範例 1：收集 vintage typewriters 的學生

Dear future roommate—before I unpack, I should warn you: my Smith Corona Galaxie Twelve (1965, robin's egg blue) takes up the same space as a small microwave, and yes, I do still use it. The carriage return ding sound is, as my mother says, "not optional for my creative process."

範例 2：凌晨 2 點辯論哲學的學生

Quick negotiation: if I'm still talking at 2:14 AM about whether Hume's bundle theory accidentally proves consciousness is a software loop, you have my permission to throw a pillow. I will not be offended. I will, however, continue the argument over breakfast.

範例 3：週末做麵包的學生

Sunday mornings I bake bread. Specifically: a 72-hour cold-fermented sourdough whose starter, Olga, has been alive since I was thirteen. Olga gets her own shelf in the fridge. I'm sorry about this in advance—she's non-negotiable, but I will bring you the first slice.

範例 4：vintage radio 修復學生

The thing on my side of the room that looks like a small altar is actually a 1957 Zenith Trans-Oceanic. It works. I rebuilt it. On rainy nights I tune in shortwave radio from Tokyo and Reykjavík, mostly because the static is the most honest sound in the world.

範例 5：每天畫一張地圖的學生

Every night before bed, I draw a map. Not of anywhere real—imaginary cities, mostly, with names like "Port Querencia" and "The Mostly-Drowned Republic of Yev." I've done this since I was nine. I have 2,847 of them in a shoebox. I will probably show you the shoebox before I show you anything else.

共同特徵：

• 每個開頭都給一個 物件 / 動作 / 習慣
• 都極度 specific（年份、數字、名字）
• 都帶 warm tone（自嘲、邀請對方參與）
• 沒有任何 generic「I love X」

六、Anti-Pattern：這 7 種開頭立刻 reject

15 年來我看過最常見的 Roommate Letter 災難開頭：

Anti-Pattern 1：「I'm a hard worker and team player」

→ 履歷自介，不是 letter。直接 reject。

Anti-Pattern 2：「Hi, my name is [Name] and I'm from [Place]」

→ 你的名字 adcom 已經知道。浪費 50 字。

Anti-Pattern 3：「I've always been passionate about...」

→ Passionate 是 Stanford 文書的死刑字。

Anti-Pattern 4：「I can't wait to come to Stanford because...」

→ 這是 Why Stanford 的工作，不是這篇。

Anti-Pattern 5：「Let me tell you about my achievements」

→ 整個申請都在講 achievements——這篇別講。

Anti-Pattern 6：「I'm easygoing and respectful」

→ 全美 50,000 個 Stanford 申請者都這樣寫。

Anti-Pattern 7：「I love trying new foods」

→ 你和其他 5,000 個人都這樣寫。Specific 不夠。

七、Pacing：250 字怎麼分配

我給 Stanford 申請者的 Roommate Letter pacing 範本：

250 字看起來短，其實非常夠用——關鍵是不能浪費任何一個字在 generic 描述上。

八、完整範例：250 字 Stanford Roommate Letter

來看一個我帶過、最後 admit Stanford 的學生（人文 + 創意寫作 Spike）的完整 Roommate Letter：

Dear future roommate, >I should warn you about Margaret. Margaret is the rubber duck that lives on my desk, and Margaret thinks. Specifically, Margaret thinks about anything I'm stuck on—calculus problems, college essays, why I said the wrong thing at dinner. I explain things to Margaret out loud; this is called "rubber duck debugging" in CS, but I started doing it at age 7 when my mother got tired of me asking her to listen to me solve riddles. >If you walk in and find me whispering to a duck at 11 PM, you are not hallucinating. You are encountering my actual study method. >Some other things you should know: I make 焗烤通心粉 when I'm sad (sorry in advance about the smell of melted Gruyère). I keep a list of words I learned that week in a Moleskine; this week's were "petrichor," "sonder," and "霧霾." I cannot whistle. I am, however, an excellent ear-tickler if you have an itch you can't reach. >In exchange for tolerating Margaret, I will: introduce you to my mother's 油飯 (she sends a Tupperware monthly), drive you anywhere in a 50-mile radius of Stanford, and listen to whatever you're stuck on—just give Margaret a chance first; she's surprisingly insightful. >See you in September. >[Name]

拆解 WWS：

• Warm：對 roommate 直接說話 + 提到媽媽 + offer driving
• Weird：跟橡皮鴨講話 + 焗烤通心粉的悲傷 ritual + 無法吹口哨但會耳朵搔癢
• Specific：Margaret 這個名字 + 7 歲開始 + 三個本週學的詞 + 焗烤通心粉的具體起司 + Tupperware

九、文化張力：台灣學生的特殊機會

對台灣學生來說，Roommate Letter 有一個結構性優勢——你的 quirks 通常包含文化雙語的細節，這對 Stanford adcom 來說極為 fresh。

規則：保留中文字——不要翻譯。Stanford adcom 看到 「蔥油餅」「滷肉飯」 比看到 "Taiwanese scallion pancake" 印象深 10 倍。

但避免：把 Roommate Letter 寫成「I want to share my culture」的政治正確自述——那是 Diversity essay 的工作。Roommate Letter 是讓文化自然從你的日常滲出來，不是 lecture 對方。

十、語氣校準：怎麼聽起來像你，不是 ChatGPT

Stanford adcom 在 2024-25 申請季開始能輕易辨識 ChatGPT-generated essays。Roommate Letter 因為篇幅短，是 ChatGPT 影響最大的一篇。

最簡單的測試：把你的 Roommate Letter 唸給你最好的朋友聽——他應該能說「對，這就是你會說的話」。如果他覺得「太正式了」，就太像 ChatGPT。

十一、5 個常見問題

Q1：要不要直接稱呼「Dear future roommate」？

A：可以，但不是必要。直接從第一句進入也 OK。

Q2：可以幽默嗎？

A：鼓勵。但要是自嘲式幽默，不是 sarcasm 或 mean humor。

Q3：可以提家人嗎？

A：鼓勵——通常是 Roommate Letter 的金礦。媽媽、奶奶、爸爸、寵物，都很適合。

Q4：可以寫 conflict 或 vulnerability 嗎？

A：謹慎。輕度的 vulnerability OK（「我會在 finals week 變得不像我」），但不要 trauma dump。

Q5：可以提我有特殊習慣（早起、晚睡、極度乾淨）嗎？

A：可以——但要用幽默和 self-aware 包裝，不是 demand。例：「我每天 5:30 起床跑步——我會盡量不讓門關得太大聲。」

十二、結語：250 字裡藏一個你

15 年實戰下來，我給每位 Stanford 申請者 Roommate Letter 的最後一句叮嚀：

這 250 字是整個 Stanford 申請裡，唯一一篇 adcom 把你當「一個人」來讀的東西。

其他文書都在問「你為什麼適合 Stanford」「你的 spike 是什麼」「你想念什麼 major」——只有 Roommate Letter 在問「你住起來像什麼」。

Stanford 知道他們錄取的是一個會住在校園裡 4 年的人——不是一份履歷。一個會在 dorm 走廊跟室友吵架、會在 dining hall 笑、會在某個凌晨 3 點哭、會在某個下午幫陌生人開門的人。

寫到 adcom 讀完想說「我會想介紹這個孩子給我兒子當室友」——你就贏了。

250 字裡藏一個你。Warm, weird, specific——always。
